Q: „Are there any special places where you go in order to think of ideas?“
A: „I don’t have a specific location that I go to for inspiration but travelling has always been a huge influence on my work and I often use photographs I take whilst travelling to paint from. For example in 2015 I spent two months travelling around the USA and when I came home I made two painting series based on my experiences there. And in 2017 I spent three weeks travelling in Japan and when I came back I made the painting series Mono No Aware.“
Q: „If there’s anything you could change in the world through your work, what would it be?“
A: „I have been actively trying to use my work to raise money for charities this year. I think it’s important to use whatever platform or skill you have to try and support causes that you believe it. Earlier this year I donated 100% of the profits from print sales of my ‘Hello America’ series to WWF Australia to help save the animals that were hurt during the wildfires. Currently I’m donating 25% of profits from print sales of all of my prints to Black Lives Matter.“
Q: „Artists often talk about how to discover a style. Do we chase after it? Does it somehow find us? How do you figure out what it is, that’s different from everyone else?”
A: „I don’t think style is a conscious decision. If you are forcing yourself to make marks in a particular way it’s probably just copying whatever the current ‘cool’ look is. Style is really just like your handwriting, you don’t think about it it is just how you naturally make marks.“
